On May 5, 2025, Iran's Ministry of Defense announced the successful test of a new solid-fuel ballistic missile with a range of up to 1,200 km. The missile, named Qassem Basir, is designed to reach targets in Israel and penetrate advanced missile defense systems like the U.S.'s THAAD.
The unveiling comes amid rising tensions with the United States over Iran's nuclear activities and its alleged support for Yemen's Houthis, who recently launched an attack on Israel's international airport.
Meanwhile, nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S. continue, with both parties expressing interest in resuming dialogue. However, the U.S. demands that Iran halt uranium enrichment and dismantle its ballistic missile program as prerequisites for sanctions relief.
