Met Gala 2025: Black Dandyism Shines in Contemporary Fashion

The 2025 Met Gala celebrated Black dandyism under the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", highlighting elegance and Afro-descendant cultural heritage in fashion.

On the evening of May 5, 2025, the Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, featured the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", inspired by Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion. The event honored Black dandyism, an aesthetic blending elegance, resistance, and cultural affirmation.

Celebrities like Zendaya, Rihanna, and Janelle Monáe showcased outfits reinterpreting dandy style. Zendaya wore a white Louis Vuitton suit, paying tribute to Diana Ross. Rihanna presented a maternity look with Marc Jacobs tailoring. Janelle Monáe chose a deconstructed Thom Browne suit, complete with monocle and cape.

Designer Dapper Dan, a Harlem icon, attended in a sequined outfit featuring the Sankofa symbol, representing the importance of reflecting on the past to build the future. The associated exhibition explored themes like "Presence", "Freedom", and "Heritage", highlighting the influence of Black dandyism on contemporary fashion
